Built for Harry E.
Noyes for cruising, the clipper-hulled Tioga (the Iroquois name means "swift
current") soon established herself as one of the fastest racing yachts of all
time. In her second season, she sailed the 171 miles between
New London and Marblehead nearly two hours faster than the previous best time
made by the 136-foot schooner Elena in 1911. Three years later, she began her
quarter-century domination of the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit
with a stunning time of 19 hours, 36 minutes on the 184-mile Miami-Nassau Race.
Following the United States' entry into World War II, she was requisitioned by
the Coast Guard for use as a submarine picket on the East Coast.
